NRC energy and protein references

Energy and protein needs are calculated from NRC 2006 references using your dog’s details and life stage. The calculated recommended protein allowance is retained as the minimum target. No fixed protein density or ceiling of 30% above the NRC reference is imposed on every dog.

Energy uses an app tolerance of ±10%. Protein is not reduced by this tolerance; it must meet the NRC protein reference. Having no numerical protein ceiling does not establish that unlimited protein intake is safe.

The menu catalog is limited to 19 ingredients with defined preparation methods. Of the total cooked or ready-to-serve weight, meat and fish make up at least 40%, starchy ingredients at most 35%, vegetables 15–25%, and added oil at most 6%. There is no 30% minimum for starch. These proportions are PawsMenu recipe preferences, not NRC requirements. Added oil and total prepared weight are also considered when comparing suitable options. Pantry calculations use only the ingredients you select.

Menus for adult, senior, growing and pregnant dogs use their own NRC references in the same recipe checks. Recorded amino acids and total fat are checked, and known nutrient upper-limit excesses are rejected. Missing data are not treated as zero. For nursing dogs, daily amounts are not provided without verified complete nutrient and energy data.

The result is calculated using NRC energy and protein references. Adequacy of all vitamins and minerals has not been verified. This calculation is not a digestibility measurement, clinical validation or a guarantee of a complete and balanced daily diet.
